Major Series - South Autumn 2013

Think muscle burn, mud-wrestling with yourself, team mates to hand, roaringly encouraged by armed service veterans every step of the way and a sense of hard earned achievement at the end – voted the UK’s Best Trail Race by The Running Awards 2014, British Military Fitness’s award-winning Major Series is coming to Stirlingshire on Saturday 6th June 2015. It will be held at the Cardross Estate at Port of Menteith in Stirlingshire.

The trail runners will be able to take part in the 5K or 10k obstacle course – having to crawl and push themselves through one of the UK’s muddiest courses out there, as the photographs accompany this article underline.

The challenge is suitable for men and women of all fitness levels. Whether competing alone or with a group of mates, the Major Series is a fun challenge that will put anyone and their friends to the test over some of the muddiest 5k and 10k obstacle courses the UK has to offer.

Crawling through mud, under barbed wire or dunking into ice baths, all challengers will have to work as a unit to make it to the finish line. The events are run by leading outdoor exercise company, British Military Fitness [BMF]; and are marshalled by ‘the Major’s Troops’, all of whom are former or serving members of the British armed forces.

The object is to finish. The course has been designed to be achievable even for those who have never taken on an endurance or obstacle event before. The emphasis is on helping and encouraging competitors around the course and the BMF ‘troops’ are there to provide a helping hand should it be needed.

The 5k and 10k routes have a number of the same obstacles, but the 10k option offers a tougher challenge for those with higher endurance levels or those looking to push themselves.

The Major Series, which launched in 2011, was one of the UK’s very first obstacle course races. Now in its fourth year, BMF are expecting in the region of 18,000 competitors to take part this year.

BMF MD, Rob Love, says: ‘We’re really looking forward to this year’s events and we want people to come along ready to take on a big challenge.

‘But most importantly we want people to have a good time and a laugh as they tackle their way through the mud. There is always a lot of camaraderie out on our courses, with fellow competitors stopping to help each other out, so even if you’ve never tried something like this before you can be sure of making it round and feeling that sense of achievement as you cross the finish line.
